Making scented candles is a fun and rewarding craft, but it’s not uncommon to encounter some issues, especially for beginners. 

From uneven surfaces to weak fragrance, these problems can be frustrating, but most of them have simple and effective solutions. 

Below are the most frequent problems people face when making scented candles, along with their causes and step-by-step fixes to help you create perfect, long-lasting candles every time.


1. Uneven Surface, Cracks, or Bubbles

One of the most common issues is a candle surface that’s bumpy, has holes, or is filled with bubbles. This not only affects the candle’s appearance but can also impact its burning performance.

Causes:

- Pouring the wax at a temperature that’s too high or too low.

- Rapid cooling (e.g., placing the candle near a fan, air conditioner, or open window).

- The wick is not fixed firmly and tilts during pouring.

- The candle container is too cold before pouring.

Solutions:

- For soy wax, the ideal pouring temperature is65–75℃. Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature accurately.

- After pouring, use a heat gun or hair dryer on low heat to gently sweep the surface of the wax. This helps eliminate bubbles and smooth out any uneven areas.

- Place the candle in a wind-free, constant temperature area to cool slowly. Do not move or disturb it during the cooling process.

- Preheat the candle container to around 40℃ before pouring the wax to prevent sudden temperature changes.


2. Sunken Center and Wax Hanging on the Sides

Many beginners find that their candles sink in the middle after cooling, with wax sticking to the sides of the container.

This is a typical issue related to wax contraction and heat distribution.

Causes:

- Wax shrinks as it cools, leading to a sunken center.

- The wick is too thin, so the burning heat is insufficient to melt the wax evenly.

- Pouring the wax at a temperature that’s too low.

Solutions:

- Top up the candle with a small amount of melted wax 10–20 minutes after pouring (when the surface starts to solidify but is still soft). This fills the sunken area and creates a smooth surface.

- Replace the wick with aone size thicker option to ensure enough heat is generated during burning.

- Increase the pouring temperature by 5℃ to improve the wax’s flow and reduce shrinkage.


3. Smoking, Sooty Flames, or Blackened Containers

A smoking candle or blackened container not only looks messy but can also produce an unpleasant smell. This issue is usually related to the wick or burning environment.

Causes:

- The wick is too thick, causing incomplete combustion.

- The wick is not trimmed short enough (any length over 0.6cm will likely cause smoking).

- Too much fragrance oil is added.

- Drafts or wind cause the flame to tilt and burn unevenly.

Solutions:

- Trim the wick to 0.5–0.6cm before each use. This is the optimal length for a clean, steady flame.

- Replace the wick with a one size thinner option to promote complete combustion.
